I’m a student at Forth Valley College and find it extremely disrespectful that they are making staff redundant during a global pandemic and replacing them with people who don’t even need to have a teaching qualification to teach me what I need to know for passing my course. #collegesneedlecturers

Hello there,
I’m writing to you today to complain about the current EIS FELA dispute, I believe that it is unnecessary to put our lecturers jobs on the line when all they've done through the COVID-19 pandemic is fully support us as students.
They’ve gone through just as much hardship as us students have and I believe that the post of “instructor assessor” is completely ignoring that hardship and dedication to us students, it makes me feel like Forth Valley College no longer cares about the education that it’s current and future students receive and all the college really cares about is making a profit and saving money when and where they can. This isn’t just disrespectful to the lecturers, it is also disrespectful to the students who are being forced to self study when their lecturers are striking, Us students are missing out on valuable class time to prepare us for exams and our future, I genuinely think that because of these strikes I will no longer be able to take my place at university because of the time that I’ll be missing that could be spent with lecturers to help me pass my course.
Lecturers work tirelessly to make sure that students pass their courses and get extra support if needed, I can’t even count on two hands the amount of times I’ve gone to a lecturer asking for help and support and they willingly gave up their time to help me out, even with that lecturer having 50+ students. The position of instructor assessor feels very formal, just like a SQA exam invigilator, I think that these new positions will just do the very basics of their job, which is to teach students, there won’t be any real interaction with them to make them feel like they’re someone I could go to when I’m struggling with my work or with anything else that I need help with. Also instructor assessors get less time to prepare for a class unlike lecturers, and based on that fact alone the position is devaluing practical classes which are one of the many reasons students choose to study at your institution. I would expect instructor assessors to get the exact same amount of time as lecturers do to prepare for their classes, if you are replacing lecturers with them.
My desired outcome is that Forth Valley College scrap these unnecessary roles and allow lecturers to do the job they were given, which is to teach students the best way they can by utilising their skills and knowledge.
I would also like for the college to stop this dispute with EIS and focus back on their current and prospective students, and work their way out of what has happened with COVID-19 and help students get back to their best.
