There is no plan B - We need sustainability!

Motion passed November 2021 (Student Council)

FVSA Notes:

  1. Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 commits Scotland to reducing its emissions by at least 75% by 2030, 90% by 2040 with the aim of reaching net zero by 2045 at the latest.
  2. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a blueprint to achieve a better and further sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The seventeen goals interrelate and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030. 3. New NUS research has found that over 60 per cent of all university students want to learn more about sustainability, with 87 per cent of all students agreeing that their universities should take sustainability seriously.
  3. Sustainability is a top priority for Forth Valley College – as they recently backed the sector wide ‘Scottish Colleges’ Statement of Commitment on the Climate Emergency’, which outlines 10 key actions colleges will deliver to help achieve Scotland’s Net Zero target.

FVSA Believes:

  1. That we must embed positive, lifelong environmental, ethical, and sustainable practices into Association activities, the College and wider community.
  2. We must provide opportunities for students to get involved in our projects and activities, which focus on environmental and sustainability issues. Which in turn, we will see positive impacts to student health and wellbeing.

FVSA Resolves:

  1. Establish a Sustainability Pledge that encompasses the FVSA commitment to drive healthier habits for our people and our planet.
  2. Reduce our operational carbon footprint through behavioural change.
  3. Working with the College to create biodiverse spaces and implement student-led projects to enhance our current spaces.
  4. Collaborate with the College and promote Active Travel by highlighting the benefits to physical, environmental and economic wellbeing.
