Students with Disabilities

The Student Association has long campaigned on behalf of students with disabilities to aid in eradicating the stigma from all disabilities, defy perceptions, and embolden all our members to take a positive attitude towards accepting the nature of disability and conquering biases.

In our efforts, we work with the College to ensure students with disabilities are aware of the support available on campus and in the community. This academic year, 2021/2022, the Vice President Claire Green has worked especially hard as this is an area close to her heart. She states,

"Finding out your disabled turns your life upside down, I say this from my personal experience. Learning how to listen to your body or learning how to cope with a condition you have had for years is always going to be difficult. Having the extra support from the collage has been brilliant, but there are more things that can be done not only for people with visible conditions but for hidden ones too.

The biggest thing driving me is my own experience as a student, where other students would call me a hypochondriac or saying, “you don’t look disabled” I do not want others to go through this. If we can break that stigma together then let’s do this!"

We have tried to make it easy for students with disabilities to access a directory of support available to them. Claire has made a guide for students - she states, "I decided to take the plan of creating a booklet going into the details of what support the College have to offer. For me, doing this has made me realise how much of the information on the College’s support is out there but all in different places. So I’ve compiled them all together in the hope it makes it easier for everyone to find".

Physical Health & Accessibility

We have paired up with Wai, Leisure Facilities Coordinator, to bring you this video - we aim to highlight that you can access the gym facilities on any of the campuses, no matter your disability. Wai and his team will work with you to adapt the equipment and create personal plans that work best for you.
